We saw Motown at The Fox yesterday. It was the second show in this year's Broadway Series. The show is a "jukebox musical" which, according to wikipedia is " a stage or film musical that uses previously released popular songs as its musical score. Usually the songs have in common a connection with a particular popular musician or group." Other musicals we've seen that fall into this catagory are "Mama Mia" and "Movin' Out", the latter of which we saw on Broadway back in 2004.
The musical is based on Berry Gordy's 1994 autobiography called "To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown". Um, am I the only person who didn't know that Berry Gordy and Diana Ross were and item or together or whatever? I have never been a fan of Diana Ross. I think she is a stuck up diva. There is only one song that she sings that I like and it's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" but I digress. The show focuses on Barry, Diana, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson. Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder (we share the same birthday) also were featured. Anyway, we really liked the show.
We ate dinner at Dressel's Public House. We were seated upstairs in "The Pub Above" room which is really cool. We had never eaten in this room before. It feels like a small English pub. We started with the pretzel and rarebit sauce and then I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup which is what I get every time we go there. It's sooooo good. Bill had the pan roasted chicken breast. We each had the Perennial Peace Offering which is a nut brown ale with maple roasted squash, cinnamon and cloves. Yum!
Next show, A Christmas Story. I can't wait!
