We saw Porgy & Bess at The Muny on Friday. We have voted for it many times during the show vote at the end of each season but this was the first time we’ve ever seen it. The last time it was at The Muny was 1988 and the first year we had tickets was 1994. Even though we knew very little about the show, we voted for it because a) It’s Gershwin, b) it’s a classic and c) the song Summertime (I love that song). Anyway, this production was different in that it was a touring company instead of a Muny production. The actor who played Porgy, Nathaniel Stampley, has an amazing voice and he did an outstanding job. The actress who played Bess, Alicia Hall Moran, also had a nice voice although sometimes when she was singing, it was difficult to understand her. Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the show and I’m glad we finally were able to see it.
We ate dinner at the Culver Pavillion, something we haven’t done for years. The dinner used to be catered by LoRusso’s and then in 2007 or 2008, the Muny created its own catering company. We ate there the first year and weren’t really impressed so we usually have a picnic or go to one of our favorite places nearby such as Bottleworks or Six Row but we decided to give it another try this year. I’m glad we did because it was very good. The salad/appetizer table had gezpacho, two kinds of salad, fresh fruit (strawberries, grapes, canteloupe), a cheese plate of cheddar, swiss and blue, cous cous, hummus and pita, mini muffins (lemon, poppyseed and blueberry). The entrée table had rigatoni and meatballs, ribs, lemon basil chicken and ratatouille. Oh my goodness, if you couldn’t find something you like, then you are a picky eater…hee hee hee. I ate everything except the muffins on the appetizer table and then had the rigatoni and I was seriously stuffed. Dessert was lemon blueberry bars and I could only eat half. We have reservations again for the 25th and I’m looking forward to it. We may just have to add the Culver Pavillion back into our Muny dinner rotation. J
Next week, Addams Family. Uncle Fester and the moon…bwahahaha!
