We saw "Memphis" at the Fox last weekend. It was the last show in this year's Broadway Series. It's a muscial loosely based on one of the first white DJ's to play African-American music in the 1950's and it won best musical at the 2011 Tony Awards. We really enjoyed the show and even bought the soundtrack.
After the show, we ate dinner at Bottleworks. We had planned to sit outside on their patio since the weather was so nice but it is currently being renovated so we ate inside. The patio will be completed some time this month so we'll check it out next time we're there.
We saw Bring It On last Saturday at the Fox Theater. It's a story of a cheerleader who is transferred to another school because of redistricting and she convinces the "dance crew" at the school to become a "cheerleading squad". Anyway, I don't want to give too much away but it's a cute story and I loved the dancing and gymnastics. After the show, we ate dinner at Pi and then stopped by Six Row for a brew.
I flew to Kansas City on Monday for business. On the way back to St. Louis on Tuesday, I was in line waiting to board (Southwest) and the girl in front of me had a "Bring It On" luggage tag and jacket. I told her that Bill and I had seen the shown on Saturday and she said that she was in it! She was from KC and had flown back on Monday for the day. One of the men in line then asked her if the cast was mostly musical theater or gymnasts and she said that it was about half and half. She said that she was musical theater and she was currently living in New York.
In other news, the Cardinals are 2 and 0 so far this season. 12 in 12, baby!
We saw Rock of Ages at The Fox on Saturday. It was not one of the Broadway Series shows but we traded our tickets for West Side Story since we've seen it several times at The Muny. I'm really glad we did because the show was excellent and the music was great. It takes place on the Sunset Strip in 1987 and the songs are from that era featuring Journey, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Styx, Heart and Quiet Riot, just to name a few. I think it was the first musical that we've seen that I have known every song. Here's the complete list:
1. Just Like Paradise / Nothin' But A Good Time
2. Sister Christian
3. We Built This City / Too Much Time On My Hands
4. I Wanna Rock
5. We're Not Gonna Take It
6. Heaven / More Than Words / To Be With You
7. Waiting For A Girl Like You
8. Wanted Dead Or Alive
9. I Want To Know What Love Is
10. Cum On Feel The Noize / We're Not Gonna Take It
11. Harden My Heart / Shadows Of The Night
12. Here I Go Again
13. The Final Countdown
14. Any Way You Want It / I Wanna Rock - Reprise
15. High Enough
16. I Hate Myself For Loving You / Heat Of The Moment
17. Hit Me With Your Best Shot
18. Can't Fight This Feeling
19. Every Rose Has Its Thorn
20. Oh Sherrie
A movie is currently in the works and set to be released in June. I definitely want to see it although I wonder if it will be as good. I may buy the cast recording too!
We ate dinner at Over Under Bar & Grill and then stopped at Six Row for a few brews. We also bought a growler of the brown ale to enjoy during the Super Bowl. I really only watch the Super Bowl for the commericals. I don't think they were as good as in years past. Here's my favorite one though...
Too funny! If you've never seen the movie, Ferris Bueller, I'm sure the commercial wouldn't make any sense. It's one of my favorite movies though, so I think it's hysterical.
We saw La Cage Aux Folles at The Fox Theater on Saturday. Here's a video clip...
George Hamilton played Georges and Christopher Sieber played Albin. Georges has a son from a previous "relationship" and he and Albin raise him. The son is now engaged to the daughter of a very conservative political candidate who wants to close down the nightclubs in Saint-Tropez, one of which Georges and Albin own. Anyway, the show is hilarious. I still have one of the songs running through my head...We are what we are and what we are is an illusion.
We ate dinner at Morgan Street after the show. We hadn't eaten there in quite some time so it was the perfect opportunity and yum, it was good. :)
The next show in the Broadway Series is West Side Story (which we've seen several times at the Muny) but we traded it for Rock of Ages which is next month. It features rock songs from the 80's from Journey, Styx, Pat Benetar, Bon Jovi, etc. We're looking forward to it.
We saw "Christmas with the Rat Pack" at The Fox on Saturday. We had seen The Rat Pack back in October of 2007 and really enjoyed it so I was especially looking forward to it this time since it included Christmas songs. The actors who portrayed Frank, Dean and Sammy all did a wonderful job. Of course the lobby of the theater was all decorated for Christmas and it looked so pretty and festive.
We decided to eat lunch at Six Row before the show. We don't usually eat lunch out before the show but we had to taste their limited brew, Killer Whale, so it was the perfect opportunity since Six Row is only a few blocks from The Fox. Anyway, Killer Whale is a hoppier version of their Whale. Oh yeah, I also had the bacon mac and cheese which is just love! After the show, we ate dinner at Modesto, our favorite tapas restaurant. By the end of the meal, we were too full to even think about dessert!
OK, I know I've mentioned it several times but I really do have my Hawaii post just about ready to go...finally. I've got it set to post on Thursday so be sure to check back.
We saw Billy Elliot at the Fox Theater on Saturday. It was actually the last show of the 2010-2011 season and was originally scheduled for August but was moved to November due to a scheduling conflict. The show is about a young boy in England in 1984 during the miner's strike. He takes boxing lessons but hates it and he ends up taking ballet instead. There are 4 boys who play Billy, rotating performances each day, presumably due to child labor laws. The actor who played Billy in this performance, Kylend Hetherington, was great. The dancing was incredible, especially the tap numbers. I love tap dancing. For some reason, it just fascinates me.
After the show, we ate dinner at Rosalita's Cantina, a mexican restaurant on Washington. We've eaten there once before and we liked it so we decided to try it again. We started with the empanadas and then I had the cheese enchiladas and Bill had the carne asada quesadilla. Yum. After dinner, we headed to Urban Chestnut for a few beers; Me - Hop Switch 3 and the Urban Blacktop; Bill - Urban Blacktop and the Pilgrim 7.
I worked on Christmas cards Friday and Saturday night and I'm almost finished with them. I'm hoping to get all of the shopping done by the end of November and then I can start planning what Christmas cookies I'm going to make. Oh yeah, somewhere in between, Bill will be getting up on the roof to put up the lights. I'll be sure to post a picture...hee hee hee.
We saw Addams Family at the Fox Theater on Saturday. It was the first show in this season's Broadway Series. It's based on the 1960's TV series of the same name and included all of the characters from the show; Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch, Grandma, Thing and It as well as a few new characters. It was a very good show and I would see it again if I had the chance.
Uncle Fester confessing his love for the moon and singing The Moon & Me was just hilarious. When I was a kid, Uncle Fester gave me nightmares. Seriously. For some reason, I just thought he was scary and when he would stick a light bulb in his mouth and it would light up, that freaked me out. Well, he did it during the show too and it still kind of freaks me out. I'm not sure why but it just does. I know, I'm strange. Anyway, when Uncle Fester is singing to the moon, he's not scary anymore...hee hee hee.
After the show, we ate dinner at Six Row while watching the Cardinals/Phillies game. The Cardinals ended up losing despite an early lead, but that's ok, because I still think that they'll beat the Philies in the end.
We saw Next to Normal at The Fox Theater on Saturday. It's the story of a family whose lives are touched by a tragedy and mental illness. Alice Ripley played the part of the mother and she won the 2009 Tony Award for her peformance. While she was outstanding, I actually think Emma, Hutton, the actress who played the daughter, is a better singer. The musical score was very contemporary and powerful. I know it's hard to imagine singing about mental illness but it worked.
After the show, we went to Triumph Grill for an early dinner. We had the crab and sweet potato chowder along with the Thai bbq chicken flatbread and the buffalo chicken queso. Yummy. We then stopped by Six Row for a few brews. It was a very fun day.
The next show in the Broadway series is Jersey Boys which is playing in May but we traded those tickets for the performance of Wizard of Oz back in November since we had seen Jersey Boys a few years ago. The last show in the series is Billy Elliot which was originally scheduled for August but has been rescheduled for November due to a scheduling conflict.
I'll have some cards to share in the next few days so be sure to check back soon.
We saw Nine to Five at the Fox on Saturday. Nine to Five is one of my all-time favorite movies. I know I've seen it at least 30 times, maybe even more. Anyway, the musical was just as good. I knew a lot of the lines since they were they were taken directly from the movie. I hope that it comes back to the Fox soon because I would love to see it again.
After the show, we ate dinner at Llywelyn's in the Central West End and then enjoyed a few brews at Six Row. We had forgotten that Six Row now serves food or else we would have eaten there. Oh well, we hadn't been to Llywelyn's for quite some time so it all worked out.
It was 73 degrees today and I drove home with my top down. Woohoo! Two weeks ago today we had 3 inches of sleet and 6 inches of snow plus the temps were single digits. That's typical St. Louis weather for you!
We saw Wizard of Oz at the Fox Theater last night. It's not part of the Broadway Series but season ticket holders are able to purchase additional shows or trade in one show in the series for one of the non-season shows. We decided to trade in our tickets for Jersey Boys since we saw it two years ago. It was good but we haven't seen Wizard of Oz for quite a while and it's one of my favorites. Come to think of it, we haven't seen it since we first saw Wicked back in December 2007. It was interesting to see it from another point of view. Those of you who have seen Wicked will know what I mean. I don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it though.
We ate dinner at Bottleworks before the show. Yummy. I had the chicken enchilladas and the Hot Liquor Porter and Bill had the beer brined chicken sandwich and the APA. We then bought a growler of the Hot Liquor Porter to enjoy at home this weekend. We left to drive to the Fox and since we still had about an hour and 15 minutes before the show started, Bill suggested we stopped by Six Row where he had a whale and I had another porter. It was just a porter kind of night.
I will have another installment in the "We've Got" series tomorrow...hee hee hee. Stay tuned.
