It started 25 years ago today. It was a Saturday and it was a typical cold, dreary January day. It had rained most of the day, in fact, quite heavy at times. I remember thinking that if all the rain had been snow, we'd definitely have a snow day on Monday. Well, it started snowing on Saturday night and by the time I went to bed, there was about 3 or 4 inches on the ground. When I woke up the next morning, I couldn't believe it. I had never seen so much snow. The snow had drifted up against our front door and it was at least 3 feet deep. By the time it ended later that morning, we had 24" on the ground with 6' drifts. The city was paralyzed for 5 days! It was the third biggest snowfall ever in St. Louis and the biggest one since 1915.
I'm sure I'll never see another snowfall like this. It was a once in a lifetime event. Sorry about the quality of this photo. I didn't have any printed photos of the snow so I turned on the VCR, inserted the video collage my dad had made several years ago and found this picture of me in the snow. It's a picture of the picture on the TV screen so it looks a little funky but you can at least get an idea of how deep the snow was. I'm standing in our driveway and our neighbors house is in the background.
This storm was very unusual in that it only covered a very small area. For example, Jefferson City, MO which is only about 120 miles to the west of St. Louis had no snow. Mt. Vernon, IL which is about 80 miles southwest of St. Louis also had no snow. The weatherman wasn't even predicting snow! It was just supposed to be a normal thunderstorm with rain but it was a thunder snow...hee hee hee, that cracks me up!
Today was beautiful and I even drove home with the top down and may be able to do so again tomorrow. I'll take this weather over snow any day.
